C2i collected data on schools with ongoing testing this semester. Schools with ongoing testing have mandatory testing in some capacity for students asidefrom athletes. The following bar graphs indicate the percentages of schools with ongoing testing for the Spring 2021 semester by various factors. First, approximately two thirds of the most selective schools have ongoing testing. Comparatively, just over one-tenth of the least selective schools have continued covid testing this semester.
 

For HBCUs, a lower percentage, 7.29%, have had ongoing testing this spring compared to 9.26% of PWIs.

 

 

According to spring break plan, only 10% of schools with a regularly scheduled spring break have ongoing testing. This indicates that COVID-19 likely is spreading undetected at these institutions; county level data will reveal the true effects of spring break virus spreading. 17% of schools with no spring break and 18% of schools with alternative spring break plans have ongoing testing this semester.

These graphs display the average Spring Covid numbers (both number of cases, and as a percentage of undergraduate enrollment), as well as average school size for schools in each of our three ‘spring break plan’ groups.

 

One might think that schools with fewer positive cases early in the spring will be more likely to feel comfortable sending their students on spring break. Conversely, one could argue that schools with more cases likely have less strict Covid restrictions in place and are therefore more likely to give a full spring break the greenlight.

 

While it’s likely both stories describe some schools throughout the country (and large discrepancies exist between how frequently schools require testing), the data shows that on average schools with a spring break planned have reported the fewest positive cases at the beginning of the spring semester- good news for anyone who lives in a spring break town!

 

Finally, it appears schools with larger student populations tend to opt for a full spring break. It makes sense that the smallest average school size would be those planning wellness days, mental health days, or other mid-week breaks since they have a greater ability to individualize these breaks and monitor student behavior (like requiring testing on days off).

It is that time of year again: happy spring! On normal years, spring break is an opportunity for students to take a breath of fresh air and to leave campus. This year, as you know, is not a normal year, as covid threatens to take or alter college’s plans concerning spring break.

For this project, I tried to answer the question: how does the mode of instruction influence schools’ decisions concerning spring break? Here, I only considered four modes of instruction: hybrid, in-person, online, and other. It would seem that schools which switched to online learning would be more likely to keep spring break. Conversely, in schools with higher levels of in-person learning, it wold seem that the reverse is true: namely, administrators would cancel spring break, insulating themselves from a potential onslaught of Covid cases.

In truth, the differences in plans were negligable. As shown by the first graph, schools in the four groups generally followed similar protocals: roughly 40% scheduled spring break, 20% canceled spring break, and 40% persued alternative plans.

Last year, student spring break trips were associated with COVID-19 spread both on college campuses and in local communities according to research by Daniel Mangrum. This year, many schools have opted for non-traditional spring break plans to encourage students not to travel. With data collected by C2i, this map displays each institution’s spring break plan. Schools in the Northeast opted for a mix of plans, with no spring break or non-traditional breaks being the most common. In the South, Midwest, and West there is a greater presence of regular spring break scheduled.

This above graphic illustrates different spring break plans by modes of instruction using C2i data from 1961 institutions. This stacked column graph showcases that “Spring break scheduled” is narrowly the most popular choice across all modes of instruction except for the mode labeled “Other”, although each spring break type is surprisingly fairly evenly split across the different modes.
