This graphic displays how the average student to faculty ratio varies between different modes of instruction in the spring of 2021. Using data from 2,986 different higher educational institutions in the US, this visualization grouped schools by their mode of instruction and calculated the average student-to-faculty ratio within each group. A student-to-faculty ratio is a value that illustrates the relationship between the number of students enrolled at an institution per each faculty member. A clear relationship between student-to-faculty ratio and the different modes of instruction is not apparent.

This graphic shows the displays the mode of instruction percentage for colleges during the 2021 spring semester based on the number of students at an institution. The mode of instruction data was taken from the Spring 2021 C2i Data Collection and the size of the institution data was taken from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). The graphic shows that larger institutions have higher percentages of primarily or fully online classes. Smaller institutions have higher percentages of primarily or fully in-person classes and to be determined.

Data Analyst: Meghan Corso

This graphic displays the modes of instruction for colleges and universities in the US during Spring 2021 by race, specifically splitting the colleges and universities by greater than 50% or less than 50% Black/African American population. The percentages for each bar represent the percentage of each of the two population groups that uses that mode of instruction. So, 12.58% of colleges and universities with greater than 50% Black/African American population are either fully in person or primarily in person. COVID-19 is known to disproportionately affect the Black/African American population in the US. The graph, however, does not shown an effect on mode of instruction.

This box plot displays the total percentage of undergraduate students infected with COVID-19 by the end of the Fall 2020 semester by mode of instruction. Unsurprisingly, institutions with in-person modes of instruction had higher medians of total student infections than those with hybrid or online learning.  The fully in-person mode of instruction also exhibits the highest variance of the percentage of students infected. The undergraduate student population comes from IPEDS Fall 2019 undergraduate enrollment and the COVID-19 case numbers are from the New York Times “Tracking COVID-19 at U.S. Colleges and Universities” GitHub repository. It is important to note that the NYT data set accounts for all cases reported by colleges and universities, not just undergraduate students. This varies by institution and could include faculty, staff, and graduate students, but using the undergraduate student population was the best proxy to calculate the infection percentage.

 

Data Analyst: Garnet Brown

This graphic displays how 53 different higher educational institutions in Texas have responded to the recent, widespread effects of Winter Storm Uri. The deadly snow and ice storm struck Texas’ infrastructure particularly hard, leaving millions without electricity, heat, or running water. As indicated on the schools’ websites and social media pages, most institutions have cancelled all classes at the least, while some have even closed campus and transitioned to online classes. It still remains to be seen how these schools will transition back after the crisis fades away.
