The two waffle graphs show the comparison between mode of instruction for HBCUs and non-HBCUs. The data was taken for mode of instruction for both types of colleges and universities and the percent frequency for each mode is depicted by the squares in the waffle graph.

 

As we can see from the graphs, fewer HBCUs are “Primarily or Fully In-Person”, compared to non-HBCUs. There are also significantly more HBCUs whose mode of instruction is “To Be Determined”, compared to the number of non-HBCUs with a yet to be determined mode of instruction.

This visualization illustrates the Spring 2021 modes of instruction among HBCUs. Using C2i spring 2021 data for 2,030 HBCUs, this graphic exhibits that most HBCUs are primarily or fully online during the Spring 2021 semester.

C2i collected data on schools with ongoing testing this semester. Schools with ongoing testing have mandatory testing in some capacity for students asidefrom athletes. The following bar graphs indicate the percentages of schools with ongoing testing for the Spring 2021 semester by various factors. First, approximately two thirds of the most selective schools have ongoing testing. Comparatively, just over one-tenth of the least selective schools have continued covid testing this semester.
 

For HBCUs, a lower percentage, 7.29%, have had ongoing testing this spring compared to 9.26% of PWIs.

 

 

According to spring break plan, only 10% of schools with a regularly scheduled spring break have ongoing testing. This indicates that COVID-19 likely is spreading undetected at these institutions; county level data will reveal the true effects of spring break virus spreading. 17% of schools with no spring break and 18% of schools with alternative spring break plans have ongoing testing this semester.

This graphic shows the percentage of the mode of instruction by whether the institution has ongoing COVID testing. There are 100 squares in total with each square representing a percentage point. Primarily online is 60% of the institutions with ongoing COVID testing while it is only 41% of no ongoing COVID testing. Schools with ongoing COVID testing have only 1% in the “Other” category. It is interesting to see that more primarily in-person schools have no ongoing COVID testing. If the institutions have more classes in-person, this may put students at risk since there is no ongoing COVID testing.

These graphs display graduation and retention rates for about 3,000 colleges and universities in the United States. The bar graph shows a breakdown of graduation rates for different racial groups, averaged over the last decade.

The first line graph shows how graduation rates have changed for each of these groups over the last decade from 2010-2019. The second line graph shows retention rates (percent of enrolled freshman who return for the following school year) over that same span.

These graphs will be very interesting when the Covid-affected data becomes available in the coming months. It will be important for colleges to take note of the aggregate retention rates and how students reacted to being sent home in the spring of 2020. It will also be important from a social justice perspective to look at graduation rates broken down by race as well as other categories to analyze how the pandemic has impacted groups differently.
